- Hack Week IV Approaches
- "Novell is once again sponsoring a Hack Week, from July 20 through July 24th. This is an opportunity for Novell’s Open Platform Solutions developers to use their Innovation Time Off and hunker down and work on the projects that catch their fancy.
- Hack Week projects can be new features, new applications, or improvements to existing services and applications. Previous Hack Weeks have generated projects like Tasque, Giver, Debian package support in the openSUSE Build Service, and many others. Hack Week is also a chance for Novell employees to work with the openSUSE Community contributors if they wish on projects that help improve openSUSE."
- Register Today for the openSUSE Conference!
- "Join us in Nürnberg, Germany, 17 September through 20 September for the first-ever openSUSE Conference! The openSUSE Conference schedule is up and registration is open!
- Attending the openSUSE Conference is free, but registration is required. Lunch will be provided, so please be sure to sign up early so we can get an accurate headcount."

Proyecto Amarok
- Lydia Pintscher: The Way to Amarok 2.2
"We have been working for a long time on Amarok 2.0 and the whole team was relieved when we finally released it to show what we have been working on and to get feedback from a wider audience. It was a platform release and as such didn’t have all the features Amarok 1.4 had.
- Just 5 months later we released Amarok 2.1 with a lot of improvements and added features based on the valuable feedback we got for the 2.0 release. This release included a reworked Context View (the middle part that shows all the context information for your current song), an improved playlist including searching and filtering, support for bookmarks and Amarok URLs as well as an overall improved look and feel and even better Last.fm support. For more details please read the release notes (http://amarok.kde.org/en/releases/2.1)."

- Ioan Vancea : OpenSUSE 11.1 and Plesk 9.2.1 update
- "After more than three years of using Suse 9.3 with Plesk 8.1 on one of my VPS, I decided that it is time to update to OpenSUSE 11.1 with Plesk 9.2.1 control panel. The update process went very well, here are the steps involved."
- Johnny Jacob : GDB - Scripting
- "A good majority of novice programmers tend to use printf functions to trace function calls and to printout the debug data. This forces you to change the code and compile again and again. To eliminate these superfluous tasks from your day-to-day work, use GDB. The GDB has facilities for scripting and helps in saving plenty of your time."
- Sebastian Schöbinger : Adding a music profile with the KDE Energy Manager Plasmoid
- "Do you know the feeling, when you want to listen to musik with your laptop, but you can’t close the laptop, because it would go on standby? I know it, because I have nearly everywhere my netbook and I think I don’t have a mp3 player (or is it just damaged??) and so I am listening with my laptop."
- Weekly Code Snippets
- This time we just have 1 article, because I didn't have much time to search and I didn't find find many articles, who would suit. If you think 'Hey this guy forgot my article!', write this guy (STS301) a mail ;) Andreas Marschke wrote a short article about a way how to configure his live savers easier.

- Michal Hrušecký: Open Factory
- "This not really something new. Factory development is open for few weeks already. But what does this mean? What changed and how?
- First thing that has changed is that our internal only tools doesn't work anymore. So everybody has to use BuildService to send packages to the openSUSE. Even people inside. That's a good. So now even community members can see how package is developed and developers will more probably notice submitrequests.
- Second advantage even for ordinary users is that all Factory packages has to be developed in some topic project. So no more development in developers home project. Well, development can happened this way, but before it goes to the Factory, it has to go through topic project anyway. So people interested in bleeding edge packages will have easier situation. ..."
- Sebastian Schöbinger: Qt Creator 1.2.1 released
- "Qt Creator 1.2.1 released, availible on the qt homepage or in a repository. Qt KDE repository overview"
- Michael Andres: libzypp-6.10.4: Tune automatically created solver testcases (zypper dup)
- "With previous versions of libzypp, each call to zypper dup created a solver testcase in /var/log/updateTestcase-DATE, even if you decided not to perform the update. This took a long time and wasted diskspace, because those testcases were never deleted. ..."
- Andrea Florio: LXDE, working on “branding-openSUSE”!
- "People that use my HOME project p,robably noticed lots of packages upgrades this days, they are most of all code fixing (to fix gcc post build checks) but some of them are also packages improvments, right now infact, lxde-settings-daemon result to be obsoletes and will be dropped soon from the repo. But excluding this “developers only” topics, you may be interested to know that i’m orking on “branding packages“. the first branding packages will be released today (or next week when i’ll be back from greece XD). The most important branding picture i need to create il the logout one: ..."

- Why Not openSUSE?
- "If the title has you puzzled - read on. The OP has positive comments about openSUSE and others follow this discussion, incorporating other Distro's in the mix."
- Three Questions
- "Three questions are posed. Bit of a comparison between openSUSE and SLED amongst other things. Users respond offering the requested 'Honest' answers."
- Mounting Remote File Systems
- "You can learn a thing or two reading this. We are all familiar with mounting partitions but remote files systems present a little challenge. Some nice user assist here too."
- Google Announces Chrome OS
- "With the announcement of the Google Chrome Operating System users discuss the implications amongst other things. Perhaps a revolution of the Desktop is imminent? If Google are anything to go by, they don't do anything by halves."

- ComputerworldUK/Glyn Moody: International Free and Open Source Software Law Review Launched
- "Ever since Richard Stallman crafted the first GNU GPL, free software and law have been tightly linked. Indeed, it's striking just how much time hackers spend arguing about the finer points of legal as well as software code. Given that central importance, it's good to see the launch of new magazine that covers this area specifically: ..."
- Linux.com/Christian Einfeldt: Super scary new computer game trilogy ported to Linux
- "Halloween has come early for Linux-loving gamers in the form of the scary Penumbra game trilogy, which has just recently been ported natively to GNU-Linux by the manufacturer, Frictional Games. The Penumbra games, named Overture, Black Plague, and Requiem, respectively, are first person survival horror and physics puzzle games which challenge the player to survive in a mine in Greenland which has been taken over by a monstrous infection/demon/cthulhu-esque thing. ..."
- Phoronix/Michael Larabel: OpenSuSE, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva Benchmarks
- "With it being a while since we last compared many Linux distributions when it comes to their measurable desktop performance, we decided to run a new round of tests atop four of the most popular Linux distributions: OpenSuSE, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mandriva. To see where these Linux distributions are at, we used their latest development releases and then performed all package updates as of 2009-07-15. Following that, we ran an arsenal of tests using the Phoronix Test Suite."
